MKVToolnix is a program used to edit MKV movies, convert other formats to MKV and insert audio tracks and subtitles, as well as rip contents using this multimedia container (Matroska) that has become very popular for high definition videos.
(AVI, MP4, MPEG, RMVB, etc.) in combination with some audio format (MP3, AC3, AAC, etc.) and some subtitle formats (SRT, ASS, SSA, etc.) It is possible to obtain a single container file with.MKV extension. This process known as multiplexing ( modify an MKV ) maintains the original image quality as it does not encode neither image nor audio.
In turn, from an MKV movie it is possible to discard chapters, tracks and languages that do not interest, which contributes to a lighter file. Only those items to be preserved must be marked and then the" Start multiplexed" button.
The option of repackaging or re-multiplexing a content can serve in cases where the image can not be displayed, listen to the audio or view the texts correctly. For example, when the subtitle SRT file comes separately, it may happen that some DVD or Blu-Ray players do not read them, in which case the SRT file can be added to the container and then multiplexed. On other devices, such as Sony Bravia TVs, which do not read the subtitles when they are inside the container, the file must be left separately but also the following: open the file with a text editor and save it in Unicode format with extension .SRT But also with extension .TXT, making sure that both have the same name as the .MKV.
An important fact to keep in mind during the configuration of the process mentioned above is that in the "Additional Options" tab the option "Compression" should be marked as "None" so that it does not compress the header of the files and render them irreproducible.
The mkvpropedit editing tool included in this application allows you to cut or paste portions of movies , take captures and several more functions. The tool called mkvextract allows you to extract audio tracks or titles; While the mkvinfo tool allows to obtain the data related to the Matroska container, and finally its main tool (mkvmerge) is in charge of the process already commented on to package the container from various sources.
