OpenOffice is a package with open-source office software for multiple platforms, which can be a good alternative to Microsoft Office.
It includes a word processor called Writer (equivalent to Office Word), a worksheet called Calc (equivalent to Office Excel), an application to view and create presentations called Impress (equivalent to Office Power Point), a program for Draw called Draw (much more complete than Windows Paint), and a program to manage databases called Base (equivalent to Office Access).
The interfaces of the applications included in openoffice are similar to the equivalent programs mentioned, and their handling is similar; But has the advantage that they do not require the payment of licenses for their use.
Openoffice is compatible with the formats of the mentioned Office programs (Word, Excel, etc.), therefore it gives the possibility to open files that are often sent by third parties or downloaded from the web without the need to depend Of the original program with which they were created.
This Office suite is compatible with Microsoft Office 2010, 2007 or Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac OS X files (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx, etc.). The files can be saved in some of the Office formats or, if not, the ODF format (.odt, .ods, .odp) owned by OpenOffice can be maintained.
OpenOffice 4 introduces as a main novelty the inclusion of a sidebar containing one or more panels (customizable) that add a set of tools for editing and configuring documents, spreadsheets or presentations. This is one of the biggest updates made by the Apache Software Foundation, the new entrant of this project.
OpenOffice 4 (4.1.3) is the latest version, updated in October 2016, which is available in Spanish for Windows and also for other platforms such as Mac Os, Linux and Solaris.
