Avidemux is a video editor that allows you to cut, merge, convert, filter and encode multimedia files, as well as other functions that we will discuss more in detail.
This application supports several video formats such as AVI, MPEG, MP4 and ASF, MOV and OGG and a wide variety of video and audio codecs . It allows to convert between formats, for example: from DivX to VCD, from AVI to MP4, and several more combinations.
It has tools that allow improving the quality of the video, applying filters to the image, and correcting defects such as a mismatch between sound and image. On the other hand, you can reduce the size of the file, should lower the quality of the image, but with the possibility that the video can be recorded in a smaller disk space. It also includes a tool that is used to extract audio from videos, which can then be saved as a music file.
The tool you have to cut videos is very intuitive because it has a WYSIWYG type interface to be able to instantly see how the editing changes are applied to the video. Obviously you have the inverse function, able to put together two or more videos in AVI format, to get a single file.
Another tool included in this application will be able to resize the image, either by stretching or shortening the amount of pixels in both width and height.
Avidemux can be used to increase the speed, or to decrease it in case of trying to apply a "slow motion" effect; To achieve these changes you must modify the framerate, that is, the amount of frames per second the original movie has.
It has several more tools, such as one that is used to add and edit subtitles, which has several options to customize the fonts and colors of the texts, with the possibility of adding a background of another color, if necessary; Having an option called "auto split" that, in case of dialing, will divide each sentence so that it can be seen completely on screen. For each subtitle you must define the number of consecutive frames that will remain visible, so you can use it to leave a logo or mark always visible throughout the entire video.
Undoubtedly this is a very complete application, which competes with another program that we have already recommended, such as VirtualDub.
Avidemux 2.6.13 is the latest version (updated in August 2016) of this open source software that is available for Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Windows under the GNU GPL, totally free.
