We are facing a whole golden age of video games . The segment moves more people, more developments and - of course - more money than ever before, and the big players in the market have announced new versions of their consoles or models that will appear recently.
Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo offer their consoles at very different prices, but none of them is especially expensive. Not at least compared to other consoles and video game systems that have appeared over the last 40 years. That's where we can discover the most expensive console in history. See if you know what it is.
Consoles for all tastes (and prices)
It is what they have done in Quartz, where they have analyzed the launch price of a large set of consoles since the Intellivision appeared in 1977 until today, but interestingly it does not include the recent launch of the Nintendo Switch that we just analyzed.
Prices, however, are adjusted for inflation , so they are converted to "today's dollars". This allows us to put into perspective some of the most (and least) sold consoles in history, which also had an important buying factor in price.
The Neo GeoO of 1990 is according to that study the most expensive console in all of history, but is that it already was when it was launched to the market. That made competing with his contemporaries, Sega Mega Drive (Genesis), Super NES and Turbo-Grafx 16 especially complex.
It is curious to see how the Oculus Rift (recently lowered price) and the HTC Vive are also included and are among the most expensive (in reality they should be more, alone can not do anything), and also as the step of the Years has been making clear that these machines are usually located in a range of prices ranging from 400 to 500 dollars.
In fact it is in that strip where we find most models, with very few products below 300 dollars. It is interesting to see how Nintendo is precisely that dominates that lower part of the ranking : The GameCube of 2001 was for example a bargain, do not you think?
