Traditional wireless charging systems typically make use of induction charging systems in which the device must be in contact with a special base. The ideal, of course, would be that the mobile will be charged without needing to be supported on those surfaces.
"Over-the-air" wireless charging systems have been developing for a long time, but Disney Research has come up with a new method that looks especially promising, and that when we enter a room "something special" our device automatically loads.
"Metallic" rooms, the essential requirement
The loading method is called the Quasistatic Cavity Resonance (QSCR), and is used in a room specially prepared to offer such capacity in the research laboratories of Disney Research. This technology generates a series of waves that provide energy to both mobile devices and lighting systems or fans.
The system is fully scalable according to those responsible, and could be applied to very small devices and also to a large surface. The QSCR technology generates uniform magnetic fields in a room whose walls, ceiling and floor are made of metal , and in which coils operate at the same frequency as the magnetic fields, and the currents induced in the structure are channeled through capacitors Which isolate the entire environment from potentially damaging electric fields.
In the simulations carried out the researchers assure that they can transmit up to 1.9 kW respecting the safety restrictions imposed by the FCC. This means that specific Absorption Rates (SAR, energy absorbed by the human body) are not reached for users. Those 1,900 watts make that according to their studies could be "loaded simultaneously 320 smartphones".
The test room was designed for this purpose, but researchers believe that all types of structures could be fitted with modular or painted panels with conductive properties. The efficiency of the system varies between 40 and 95% depending on the position of the user, which does not need to be less than 46 cm from the copper poles that transmit these waves.
